Video Page Keyboard Shortcuts
Every single-video page supports a set of keyboard shortcuts for controlling playback and the video UI without reaching for the mouse. These work the same way whether the resource is a YouTube video or an uploaded video.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Space | Play / pause |
| K | Play / pause (alternative) |
| → | Skip forward 5 seconds |
| ← | Skip back 5 seconds |
| Q | Slow down playback by one step |
| W | Speed up playback by one step |
| E | Turn captions on or off (in the video’s language) |
| B | Show or hide the subtitle cover |
| F | Enter or exit fullscreen |
| H | Toggle all keyboard shortcuts on or off |
The subtitle cover is a black box that sits over the bottom of the video, hiding any burned-in subtitles so you can practice listening without reading along.
Playback speed steps
On uploaded videos, the Q / W keys cycle through 0.25×, 0.5×, 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, 1.75×, and 2×. On YouTube videos, they cycle through whichever speeds YouTube makes available for that specific video.
When the shortcuts work (and when they don’t)
- Desktop only. The shortcuts are turned off on phones and tablets.
- Lowercase letters only. Holding Shift or having Caps Lock on will stop the letter shortcuts from firing.
- Not with modifier keys. If you’re holding Ctrl, Cmd, or Alt, nothing happens, so browser shortcuts like Ctrl+F still work normally.
- Not while you’re typing. The shortcuts are ignored whenever your cursor is in a text box, dropdown, or editable field, including the comment box.
- Not while a modal or drawer is open, such as the rating modal.
- Not on Spotify resources. Spotify resources use their own embedded player and don’t have keyboard shortcuts.
